Scanning of Architecture and Engineering Drawings

Scanning provides a low cost solution for the conversion of drawings into an electronic format for systematic documentation. Scanning also acts as an interface between drawing conversion from paper to CAD. The ability to share documents easily and quickly will help prevent delays in projects and prevent time consuming searches. Even companies that make extensive use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) live in a world of paper drawings, with an estimated 85% of all drawings worldwide in a non-electronic format.

As well as the scanning of plans and drawings we can also capture data for indexing purposes. Images that are digitally indexed so you can find your scanned drawings quickly using a simple keyword search. Drawings can be indexed by drawing number, date or location.

Digital Formats

During the scanning process we can produce the digital image in a number of formats, these include:

PDF: Portable Document Format.

PDF files can be viewed with a Web browser plug-in linked to PDF files or with Adobe Reader. Because the .pdf files are very compact, they are a popular option to transport or to store files. The PDF format is ideal for large drawings and plans.

JPEG: Joint Photographic Experts Group.

JPEG is a standardised format either in full colour or in greyscale images. It is an image compression mechanism which is suitable for artwork and photos. The compression is much greater than TIFF files but with less image quality that a .TIFF file. JPEG format is ideal for transporting or storing images.

TIFF: Tagged Image File Format

TIFF files offer exceptional quality and quite sizable. They are widely used in various Word processing, desktop publishing and graphics files. The size of the files is much larger than those from .jpeg format files. Multiple pages can be placed in a single file.
